This appealing Dutch Colonial style house, in the tony New York suburb of New Rochelle, has a link to sports royalty: it was a Christmas present from Yankees legend Lou Gehrig in 1927 to his parents, Christina and Heinrich. Lou himself did live there, as he resided with his parents until 1933, when he was 30 years old. The house is just 14 miles from Yankee Stadium.

Gehrig played 17 seasons with the Yankees from 1923 to 1939, when he was forced to retire by the onset of symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is now often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He died from the disease in 1941 at age 37.

Now freshly spruced up and renovated, the property is available for $1.459 million via Glorianne Mattesi at Douglas Elliman. Westchester County, where New Rochelle is located, has famously high property taxed but the annual real estate tax for Gehrig’s old house is a comparatively reasonable $17,500 a year. Set on a quarter acre of land, the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath house was originally built in 1895. 6sqft first reported the listing.

There’s something really generous about old houses, and also something inviting about the way owners have changed the house to suit themselves. Built in 1895, the 3,154-square-foot gambrel has been through the vicissitudes of taste over the year. Seller Ali Credendino told Mansion Global, “We completely restored the home, especially the wood components. We uncovered two sets of pocket doors on the first floor that were original to the home but had been covered up. And we restored the cedar lap siding all around the house that there are photos of Lou Gehrig working on when he owned the home.”

She and husband Jonathan were careful to preserve everything they could from the Gehrigs’ time. She said, “When we bought the home there was a clawfoot tub in the basement that we were told was the tub Lou Gehrig used to wash his uniforms. We restored it and put it in the first-floor bathroom as kind of a show piece; it’s also fully functional.” They uncovered old pocket doors, restored the woodwork on the porch and all the floors, and repairs the stained glass around the front door.

The couple renovated all four bathrooms to modern standards with trendy black hardware and white marble; also new is the kitchen. The current owners also updated the electrical and plumbing systems, as well as the roof and windows.

Additionally, the location is great. Part of a prestigious array of vintage homes, the house is close to 130-acre Glen Island Park and beach on Long Island Sound, Metro North railway, and fab shopping and restaurants.
